LOCATION: Pyewipe Pumping Station, Grimsby, UK

PROJECT VALUE:  £3.5m

Pyewipe Pumping Station and Outfall Headworks

Design of new pumping station and reconstruction of existing station, together with primary treatment works, for the discharge of treated sewage into the Humber Estuary.

Other projects on which Sir Frederick Snow & Partners Ltd has been employed by Anglian Water Ltd include Grimsby sewerage system. This was a total sewerage scheme for Grimsby, involving mechanical, electrical, civil, structural and process engineering, and architectural and hydraulic design. The £40m project incorporated three pumping stations, a storm sewer in a tunnel, twin pumping mains in a tunnel, primary treatment works and long sea outfall.

Design of large-bore pipework and a structure to house six 3.3m diameter variable-speed primary micro-strainers, two 1.8m diameter wash water micro-strainers and their associated pumps, valves and control equipment.

The plant is designed for a pump inlet and gravity outlet flow of 275 million litres per day, and the measured plankton removal rate is better than 97%.

This project won the Institution of Civil Engineers' Construction Award in its year of completion.

LOCATION:  Scaling and Lockwood Water, UK

The works included two 3.2m strategic potable water storage reservoirs, three new pumping stations, upgrading three existing pumping stations, 11km of pumping main and the decommissioning and abandonment of two water treatment works.

The full list of aspects of the job with which Sir Frederick Snow & Partners Ltd was involved includes:

  • Planning and local authority approval;
  • Land acquisition and easements;
  • Investigations of site, soils and environmental impact;
  • Hydraulic studies;
  • Cost estimating and (subsequently) cost control;
  • Architecture, landscaping and engineering design;
  • Preparation of contract documents;
  • Project management and construction supervision.

Other projects for Northumbrian Water Ltd have included the £3.5m Broken Scar Water Treatment Works.

LOCATION:  Rochdale, UK

Planning, design and management of upgrade and re-development of waste water treatment works to European Community Directives. Includes new waste treatment processes including screening, aeration, de-sludging, sludge processing, disposal and tanker loading, flow control, oxygen monitoring, odour control, automatic plant operation and telemetry, tanks and structures.

Services included planning and environmental impact studies, engineering and process design, preparation of contract documents, quantity surveying services, management and site supervision of contract, equipment testing and commissioning.
