LOCATION – TanzaniaDATE – 2004PROJECT VALUE – £5M
In
June 2004 Sir Frederick Snow and Partners Ltd were appointed by
the Tanzania Airports Authority to undertake a design for a Runway
at a newly proposed site of Songwe, west of the city of Mbeye in
south-west Tanzania.
Located
on a Greenfield site (some 10 hours by road from Dar es Salaam),
the runway length was designed for B737 operations, which at
altitude required a length of 3.2km. In order to make some savings
the first 200m at the western end of the runway was designed as a
“Starter Extension”, thus not requiring the full runway width.
The other major consideration concerned the steep fall of the land
at the western end of the site. The proposed embankment raised its
own implications with regard to the construction programme during
the the dry and rainy seasons.
A
comprehensive Topographical Survey was carried out and the runway
designs were prepared in the UK using MOSS software in full
accordance with the recommendations of the International Civil
Aviation Organisation. (ICAO).
